Love and tragedy go hand in hand in all of the great stories of love and power. After Shah Jehan built the Taj for Arjumand, their youngest son, Aurangzeb, murdered his three brothers, seized the throne, and imprisoned Shah Jehan, confining him to a balcony suite in the fort across the river from the Taj Mahal. For seven years he could see the Taj in the distance, as shown here, but could not go there to honor her memory.
